Choose a sunny garden area with a crumbly, fine-textured soil. Spider flower seeds are tiny and must be sown under no more than 1/8 to 1/4 inch of fine soil particles. Do not plant seeds too deeply. Alternatively, lightly scratch seed into the soil surface rather than creating any furrow.
Spider flower seed tends to germinate better if first stratified with cold. Place seeds in the refrigerator for 5 to 7 days, and then place in soil that is 60 to 65 degrees Fahrenheit. Overly warm soil diminishes seed germination.
In Iowa, sow spider flower outdoors after the threat of frost in spring. In southern counties, sow around May 1; in northern Iowa, wait to sow seeds until after May 10.
