Colors of Wave Petunias

Wave petunias are a type of spreading or trailing petunia developed by the Ball Seed Company. Unlike older varieties of spreading petunias, they don't need to be deadheaded or pinched back in midsummer to remain dense and free-flowering. Wave petunias stay low, but spread out to form 3- to 4-foot-wide mats. They're also good choices for large hanging baskets. Ball recommends growing Wave petunias in full sun and feeding them weekly for best results.
  1. Wave Purple

    • Wave Purple was the original Wave petunia introduction. It's now marketed as Purple Classic. The large flowers are dark rose-purple with near-black centers. There's also a newer purple variety, Purple Improved, with brighter rose-purple blooms with dark centers and veins. Both purple varieties grow 4 inches tall and spread up to 48 inches wide. Wave Purple Classic was an All-America Selection winner in 1995.

    Wave Blue

    • With a variety of purple-blue shades appearing on the same plant, Blue Wave creates a textured carpet of color when used as a ground cover. It grows 6 inches tall and spreads up to 4 feet in width. Blue Wave was an All-America Selection and Fleuroselect Gold Medal winner in 2003.

    Wave Rose

    • Blooming from spring to late summer, Wave Rose has deep pink flowers with dark veining and golden centers. The growth habit is the same as for other colors in the series. Ball recommends spacing Wave petunias 12 to 24 inches apart when massing them in a bed.

    Wave Lavender

    • Wave Lavender's bright lavender-pink blooms have a soft lavender center and conspicuous dark veining in the petals. It grows 4 inches high and spreads 48 inches across. This exuberant bloomer was a 2002 winner of the Fleuroselect Gold Medal and was also a 2002 All-America Selection.

    Wave Pink

    • Similar in growth habit to the other members of the Wave family, Wave Pink has medium-pink flowers with dark pink veining and white centers. As with all of the Wave petunias, Ball recommends making sure the foliage is dry before sunset.

    Wave Misty Lilac

    • The lightest Wave petunia available, Wave Misty Lilac has pale pinkish-lilac flowers with white and yellow centers. The delicate coloring sparkles against a dark green background.

    Other Wave Family Petunias

    • Apart from the original Wave series, there are other types of Wave petunias developed by Ball. Easy Wave petunias are slightly taller than regular Waves, topping out at 12 inches, and have a slightly smaller spread. They're offered in true red and a red-and-white bi-color in addition to white, pink and purple shades. The Shock Wave series grows 7 to 10 inches tall and spreads as wide as 3 feet; colors include white, blue, pink, lavender and mixed colors. Tidal Wave petunias grow 16 to 22 inches tall and spread 30 to 60 inches. They're available in cherry red, purple, hot pink and a white form with dark veins called Silver, which was an All-America Selection in 2002. Finally, Double Wave petunias have full, doubled flowers and grow 6 to 8 inches tall and 24 inches wide. They're available in dark purple-blue and white, as well as several pink shades.
