The Colors of Pansies

All pansies began with the wood violet wildflower. Today, garden centers offer pansies in nearly every color but green or brown. The three types of pansies vary with color markings. The most familiar has shaded colored petals with a dark center known as a "face." The most vibrant pansies have solid, translucent color such as orange or blue. A third type has small black lines radiating from the center, much like its wild relative. Many varieties from several series continue to create new color possibilities.
  1. Majestic Giants Series

    • Majestic Giant pansies have the traditional black velvet face.

The Majestic Giant pansy was the All-America Selections winner in 1966. Almost all varieties in this series have the traditional black velvet face. Majestic Giants boast blooms up to 4 inches across on small plants and only 7 inches tall. Suitable for containers as well as bedding and border plants, this mix offers a wide range of colors from blue, scarlet, yellow and orange to pure white.

    Crystal Bowl Series

    • Crystal Bowl pansy flowers have clear colors without markings.

The Crystal Bowl series of pansies have vivid clear colors, without faces. The blooms are smaller, only about 2 inches in diameter, but they are plentiful and continuous. Colors range from white to yellow, true blue, rose, orange, violet and scarlet on compact, 5-inch-tall plants.

    Imperial Series

    • Imperial Series feature pastel colors not found in other pansy series.

Gardeners prize the Imperial pansy series for its non-fading colors and dependable growth. Most of the blooms, but not all, are dark-faced. Imperial Blue was an All-America Selections Winner in 1975. This series features soft, blended colors not found in other pansy series, such as pink. Other pastel colors include apricot, rose and cream.

    Joker Series

    • The Joker series stands out with its striking color combination.

The Joker series earned fame among gardeners for its striking color combination. Jolly Joker received the A.A.S. Award in 1990. This pansy is a velvet-like purple with orange face. The Joker Light Blue variety has a light purple outer petal with a white band graduating to a dark purple face. The Joker series has a compact habit, growing to 8 inches wide.
