Cleome (Cleome hassleriana), sometimes called spider flower, is an annual native to parts of South America. Cleome grows approximately 5 feet tall and is covered in 4- to 5-inch long light green leaves. Tall stalks emerge from the center of the plant, eventually producing 1- to 2-inch fragrant blooms in various shades, including purple, white and pink. It grows well in full or partial sun and nutrient-rich, lightweight soil. Cleome seeds should be started indoors six weeks before the last spring frost in all but the warmest regions.
