Annual Plants to Plant in Full Sun

Annuals bring bright summer color to the garden. Though they only live one season, they bloom from spring through fall, unlike perennials, many of which have only a brief bloom period. Grow annuals in pots or in the ground among perennials and shrubs and you can change your color scheme each year. Regular water is essential for lush growth and flowering, especially in areas that receive full sun.
  1. Tall Annuals

    • Sunflowers, one of the tallest annuals, can reach 15 feet from a seed planted in early summer. Other tall annuals include cosmos, cleome, flowering tobacco (Nicotiana), bachelor's buttons, breadseed poppy (Papaver somniferum), snapdragons and salvia.

    Medium Annuals

    • Medium-height annual flowers are good choices for pots and other containers. They include marigolds, zinnias, African daisy (Osteospermum), geraniums (Pelargonium), heliotrope, Gerbera daisy, celosia, pentas, Marguerite daisy (Argyranthemum) gazania and lantana.

    Short or Trailing Annuals

    • Low-growing annuals make good bedding plants in the garden for swaths of color. They also complement medium-size annuals in containers. They include Ageratum, trailing lobelia, petunias, verbena, portulaca, million bells (Calibrachoa), sanvitalia and bacopa.

    Annual Vines

    • A host of sun-loving annual vines give quick coverage for a trellis in the ground or in a pot. Many attract hummingbirds. They include canary creeper, cup-and-saucer vine, morning glory, sweet pea, Spanish flag (Mina lobata), purple bell vine (Rhodochiton), cypress vine (Ipomoea quamoclit), black-eyed Susan vine (Thunbergia) and scarlet runner beans.
