How to Prune Annual Lobelias

Annual lobelia, also called edging lobelia, is native to South Africa but has been used widely in gardens since the 1800s, according to the University of Arkansas. This low-growing bedding plant produces flowers from spring until fall in mild climates. Flower colors include red, blue, white and violet. Lobelia grows well in well drained soil or in containers where it spills over the edges. Pruning lobelia during the growing season will induce more blooms.

Instructions

    • 1

Pinch off the flowers of annual lobelia when you plant it to promote root growth instead of flowering. Pinch off all of the flowers with your fingers. This also promotes bushy growth.

    • 2

Cut the lobelia back by on-half with the scissors after it flowers for the first time. This allows the lobelia to bloom again.

    • 3

Cut back the lobelia by one-half again when the flower display ends in mid summer. A new flush of flowers will appear on new growth in the fall once the weather cools.
