Sow snapdragon seeds eight to 10 weeks prior to the last frost date in your area. Seedlings will emerge in 10 to 14 days. Transplant snapdragons outdoors two to three weeks before the last frost-free date, as they grow best in cool weather and will tolerate a bit of frost.
Plant snapdragon seeds in soilless potting mix with a pH of approximately 5.5. Growing medium with a pH of 6 or higher may cause iron deficiencies in the snapdragons.
Keep planted seeds between 64 and 68 degrees Fahrenheit. Higher temperatures may delay germination. After seedlings emerge, raise the temperature a bit, if desired, to between 65 and 70 F.
Some varieties of snapdragons need light to germinate and should remain on top of the potting mix after you sow them, but cover varieties of seeds that are not sensitive to light with a thin layer of vermiculite to help retain moisture. For all snapdragon seeds, keep growing medium moist but not saturated during germination.
As snapdragon seedlings grow, allow the potting mix to dry between waterings, but don't permit the seedlings to wilt. Pinch off the tips of the plants as they grow to create compact snapdragon plants with more flowers.
