When to Plant Snapdragon Seeds?

Native to the Mediterranean, snapdragons have a pleasant fragrance and spiky stems covered with buds that open from bottom to top. Snapdragons come in dwarf, medium and tall varieties. Dwarf snapdragons, as short as 4 inches, make nice container plants or low borders. Medium varieties work well in cut flower arrangements and tall snapdragons, which reach heights of 2 to 3 feet, can serve as a back border for a flower garden. Snapdragon seeds are small but germinate readily under the proper conditions.
  1. Timing

    • Sow snapdragon seeds eight to 10 weeks prior to the last frost date in your area. Seedlings will emerge in 10 to 14 days. Transplant snapdragons outdoors two to three weeks before the last frost-free date, as they grow best in cool weather and will tolerate a bit of frost.

    Growing Medium

    • Plant snapdragon seeds in soilless potting mix with a pH of approximately 5.5. Growing medium with a pH of 6 or higher may cause iron deficiencies in the snapdragons.

    Temperature

    • Keep planted seeds between 64 and 68 degrees Fahrenheit. Higher temperatures may delay germination. After seedlings emerge, raise the temperature a bit, if desired, to between 65 and 70 F.

    Other Germination Conditions

    • Some varieties of snapdragons need light to germinate and should remain on top of the potting mix after you sow them, but cover varieties of seeds that are not sensitive to light with a thin layer of vermiculite to help retain moisture. For all snapdragon seeds, keep growing medium moist but not saturated during germination.

    Seedling Care

    • As snapdragon seedlings grow, allow the potting mix to dry between waterings, but don't permit the seedlings to wilt. Pinch off the tips of the plants as they grow to create compact snapdragon plants with more flowers.
