How to Grow Moonflower in Hanging Baskets

Related to morning glories, moonflowers (Ipomoea alba) are a trumpet-shaped annual flowering vine. Unlike morning glories, moonflowers bloom after sunset, releasing their sweet fragrance until they close again shortly after dawn. They grow fast, reaching 10 to 30 feet long in a single growing season. Hang moonflower hanging baskets near an entrance or outdoor room so you can enjoy their sweet fragrance after dark.

Instructions

    • 1

Select a hanging pot or basket with a 12- to 14-inch diameter. Fill it with a mixture of 2 parts indoor potting soil and 1 part coarse sand.

    • 2

Transplant about 12 moonflower seedlings, evenly spaced, in the prepared pot. Make a small hole with your fingers and slip the root ball of the seedling into the hole. Firm the soil around the plant so it is stable in the soil.

    • 3

Water the pot after you have transplanted all the seedlings. Allow the excess water to run out the drainage holes in the bottom of the pot. Check the pot daily and water it when the soil is dry about 1 inch below the surface.

    • 4

Cover the soil in the pot with moist sheet moss. This will help keep the soil from drying out too quickly.

    • 5

Hang the pot from a high hook. Because moonflower vines grow fast and long, you should hang the pot high enough so the vines have at least 10 feet of room to grow.

    • 6

Fertilize moonflower every three weeks with a water-soluble fertilizer mixed at half the manufacturer's recommended application rate.
