How to Grow Red Star Passion Flowers From Seeds

Red star passion flower is one common name for Passiflora coccinea, a species of flowering vine native to the Amazon Basin of South America. It is sometimes cultivated in gardens for its scarlet, star-shaped flowers, which appear in summer and later give way to small, edible fruit. The species grows well from seeds and will put on significant growth in the first few months after germination. The vines, however, require a very long summer growing period to reliably produce flowers and fruit, so it is best to grow them outdoors within USDA hardiness zones 10 to 12.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill 2.5-inch starter pots with sterile, nutrient-rich potting soil. Press the soil into the pots to remove any air pockets.

    • 2

Sow two red star passion flower seeds in each pot. Poke a 1/4-inch-deep hole into the center of the potting soil in each pot. Drop the seeds into the hole and cover them.

    • 3

Place the starter pots on a nursery tray to make them less cumbersome to move. Place the nursery tray near a large window with light for eight hours each day.

    • 4

Apply bottom-heat to the nursery tray with a propagation heat mat. Set the heat mat to 75 degrees Fahrenheit. Turn it off at night.

    • 5

Spritz the soil in each starter pot with a spray bottle until the soil feels moist at a 1/2-inch depth. Maintain moisture at a half-inch depth until you plant out the starter pots.

    • 6

Watch for germination in 30 days. Remove one of the red star passion flower seedlings from each pot.

    • 7

Plant the starter pots three feet apart in a sunny bed with rich, loamy soil two weeks after the last frost. Peel off the top inch from each starter pot before planting them.
