Shade Tolerant Flowers for Trellises

Some plants will tolerate low light, while a few thrive in it. When looking for shade-tolerant flowers to plant at the base of a trellis, select from a few flower-bearing vines to fit your style and taste. Flowering vines will attach their tendrils around the trellis and most will grow rapidly to quickly cover the trellis. Some shade-tolerant flowering vines include honeysuckle and morning glories.
  1. Evergreen Vines

    • Flowering evergreen vines keep their leaves all year long, even after the flowers fade. Passion vines are evergreen vines that will grow in shady areas. In colder climate zones, the leaves of passion vines might die. Passion vine flowers vary from green to purple. Another evergreen flowering vine is the honeysuckle vine, which also grows well in shady areas. Fragrant clusters of flowers bloom throughout the summer to early fall and attract hummingbirds, butterflies and bees.

    Annual Vines

    • Annual flowering vines provide a temporary coverage because they will die out in the winter. Morning glories can reach heights of up to 10 feet just two months after planting them, according to a webpage on Iowa State University's website. The blooms are trumpet-shaped and appear in the middle of the summer. Even on cloudy days and in the shade these flowers will remain open. Cardinal climber vines produce red flowers with white centers and have palm-like leaves. This flowering vine can reach heights of 10 feet.

    Deciduous Vines

    • Deciduous vines are woody vines that will lose their leaves each autumn. Climbing hydrangea is an attractive deciduous vine with clusters of large, white flowers that bloom in the middle of the summer. The vine will grow in shade or sun and can reach heights of up to 25 feet. Variegated porcelain berry vine does not have flowers; however, the white, pink and green leaves make the vine attractive. The vine also produces an abundance of blue berries during the summer. Variegated porcelain vines can reach heights up to 20 feet.

    Perennial Vines

    • Perennial vines will die in the winter but come back every year. Clematis vines are hardy flowering vines that can grow up to 30 feet. The vines adapt well to shade and are ideal planted in a cool environment. These vines have over 250 species with different flowering forms, bloom colors and foliage effect. Extend the bloom time of clematis vines by planting varieties that have different blooming times. Hardy kiwi vines are woody vines that will grow up to 20 feet in height. Actinidia arguta is a variety of the vine that produces white flowers from mid- to late spring with green foliage.
