How to Trim Vining Lantana

Vining lantana (Lantana montevidensis), known more commonly as trailing lantana, is a ground cover with vining stems that spread 5 to 10 feet. Although it grows quickly to form a mat of flowers as a ground cover, it is also grown in containers where the long arcs of flowers spill over the sides. Because lantana grows so quickly it is sometimes necessary to control its size with pruning.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut 1/2 inch off the tips of new vining lantana shoots during the growing season. This encourages the plant to produce new stems at the cut portion, making it bushier.

    • 2

Mow overgrown lantana in the spring with an ordinary rotary turf mower. Set the mower at its maximum height and mow back and forth, as you would if it were turf. Allow the clippings to remain. Water and fertilize, with 1 lb. of nitrogen per 1,000 square feet, after mowing.

    • 3

Prepare the vining lantana for winter freezes by pruning it to within 6 inches of the soil. Cover the plant with straw mulch and remove the mulch in early spring.
