How to Grow a Wild Potato Vine

The wild potato vine is a type of wild morning glory that takes its nickname from its close relation to the sweet potato. Wild potato vine is a perennial trailing vine that grows to over 11 feet in length. Summer is flowering season, and the wild potato vine produces masses of white flowers with purple throats. Because this vine is wild, it requires little care. The only hard and fast rule is to grow it in full sun. The vine won't flower in the shade.

Instructions

    • 1

Water the wild potato vine only during periods of drought. If the vine begins to wilt, water it. When you do water, moisten the top 10 inches of soil.

    • 2

Give the wild potato vine an arbor or fence to climb.

    • 3

Fertilize the wild potato vine with a 10-10-10 formula, sprinkled on the soil at its base, in early spring. Water after application, and use the hose to wash off any fertilizer that lands on the foliage.

    • 4

Cut back the wild potato vine in spring to keep it growing where you want it. You can safely cut back up to a third of its growth without hurting the plant.
