How Long Does Alsike Clover Live?

Alsike clover (Trifolium hybridum) is a member of the pea family and is commonly grown as pasture cover or as a hay crop. The leaves of the clover are divided into three leaflets. This perennial is short-lived when compared to most other perennials.
  1. Lifespan

    • Alsike clover is often mistaken for a biennial plant. This plant grows and produces seed each year, but does not survive hot, dry weather. In cooler climates, this clover lives for about two years while reseeding itself.

    Benefits

    • This clover variety is considered a cool-season crop that is winter hardy in most areas. It is a vigorous ground cover to use in areas that flood and can stay submerged for up to six weeks. Alsike clover survives freezing temperatures and soil heaving.

    Warning

    • Alsike clover has an annual life cycle in hot climates. High temperatures and lack of rainfall during the summer cuts the plant's lifespan short.
