How to Bring in a Sweet Potato Vine From Outside in the House

Sweet potato vines (Ipomoea batatas) are generally grown as ornamentals, both in the garden and as houseplants. The foliage color varies, depending upon variety, from bright green to pink and even black. The sweet potato vine is a tropical plant and is hardy to zones 8b through 11 on the U.S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zone map. Gardeners outside these zones grow the sweet potato vine as an annual or bring it indoors when the weather begins to cool.

Instructions

    • 1

Prepare a container for the sweet potato vine. Choose a large enough container to hold the sweet potato vine tuber with at least 3 inches of soil between the tuber and the inside wall of the pot. Use a peat moss-based potting soil and fill the container to within 1/2 inch of the rim.

    • 2

Dig into the soil 6 to 8 inches away from the base of the sweet potato vine.

    • 3

Pry the tuberous roots from the soil, gently, with the shovel or a spade.

    • 4

Cut the vine from the tuber and discard it or use it to propagate a new vine.

    • 5

Bury the tuber in the potting soil so that it has 2 inches of soil over it.

    • 6

Water the soil and keep it moist at all times. Place the container in an area that receives bright, indirect sunshine. The sweet potato vine tuber should sprout within three weeks.
