Wait until early spring, after the last frost passes. Do not wait so long that the ivy begins producing new growth.
Set the lawn mower to a height of 3 to 6 inches. Walk the mower over the ivy, starting at the edge of the ground cover and walking toward the back. Turn around and continue mowing in strips until the entire ivy bed is passed over.
Apply an all-purpose, granular fertilizer to the ivy bed after mowing. Follow the package instructions for application. Water the bed until the granular fertilizer dissolves.
