How to Plant a Garden Trellis

Garden trellises are used to support a variety of plants, from flowering vines like honeysuckle and morning glories to vegetables like peas and cucumbers. Garden trellises not only save space in small gardens, but they also add a bit of interest. A trellis placed against the wall with a nice bit of climbing foliage, for example, gives the garden an overgrown and romantic look. Plant the trellis in spring with the rest of your garden.

Instructions

    • 1

Select the location for your trellis. A freestanding trellis works anywhere in the garden. Place a leaning trellis next to a fence or a wall.

    • 2

Push the trellis into the ground a distance equal to about one-third of the total height of the trellis. This keeps it from falling over under the weight of the plant. If needed, use a hammer to pound the trellis into the ground.

    • 3

Dig a hole for the plant you want to grow up the trellis. Dig the hole four to six inches in front of the base of the trellis. Dig the hole as deep as the plant's root ball and two times as wide.

Place the plant into the hole and fill the hole with soil. Pat the soil down firmly. Select the longest stems from the plant you want to climb the trellis and tie them loosely to the trellis with twine.
