How to Propagate Grape Seed

Grape vines work equally well as ornamental vines and fruit-producing garden plants due to their attractive, palmate leaves and summertime crop of pendulous berry clusters. They reproduce in a variety of ways, including seed-based propagation, and many gardeners and novice viticulturists seek to create new grape vines at home using the seed produced in the berries. Propagating grape seeds produces reliable results and is relatively simple to accomplish, but it is a time-consuming project since the seeds require a long period of cold and heat stratification to germinate.

Things You'll Need

  • Mesh colander
  • Horticultural sand
  • Plastic bag
  • Vacuum flask
  • Hydrogen peroxide
  • 4-inch nursery container
  • Potting soil

Instructions

    • 1

Place the grapes in a mesh colander. Press them firmly against the mesh and rub the flesh until the seeds are dislodged. Run water over the colander to rinse the pulp away. Look for small, light-brown seeds with slightly pointed ends. Dry the grape seeds on a sheet of paper towel for five minutes or so.

    • 2

Pour 2 cups of horticultural sand into a plastic bag. Drizzle 1/4 cup of water over the sand and mix it with your hand until it is evenly damp. Bury the grape seeds in the horticultural sand so they are completely covered. Seal the bag and place it in the refrigerator for 90 days to cold stratify them.

    • 3

Remove the seeds from the sand after the cold stratification period. Place them in a vacuum flask. Pour hot, 90 degree F water over the grape seeds and seal the flask. Soak them for 24 hours. Drain the seeds.

    • 4

Place the grape seeds in a shallow bowl. Pour a solution of 1 tbsp. hydrogen peroxide and 1 cup of water over the seeds. Soak them in the peroxide solution for six hours to weaken the hull and kill any harmful bacteria that might be present. Allow the grape seeds to dry off before potting them.

    • 5

Prepare a rooting pot for each grape seed. Fill several 4-inch plastic pots with a mix of equal measures horticultural sand and potting soil. Saturate the soil with water and press it to extract the excess water and even out the surface.

    • 6

Sow one grape seed in each rooting pot. Sow the seeds 1/4 inch deep and cover them completely with soil. Water the seeds to a depth of 1 inch whenever the soil feels dry to the touch.

    • 7

Place the rooting pots on a propagation heat mat set to 85 to 90 degrees F. Place a full spectrum greenhouse light above the pots for 12 hours a day. Look for signs of sprouting in 30 to 45 days.
