How to Train Forget Me Not Flowers to Climb on a Trellis

Forget-me-nots are usually grown as ground cover due to their thick spreading nature and tiny blue flowers in the spring. Some species of forget-me-nots are even native to the U.S., and most grow well in U.S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zones 5 to 8. While these flowers make a nice addition to any garden, you may not have need for ground cover in your yard. Luckily, forget-me-nots can be trained to grow on a trellis if started early enough in the season.

Instructions

    • 1

Insert the trellis next to a wall behind the forget-me-not plants. Push the trellis into the ground about 1/3 of the total height of the trellis to ensure it won't fall over.

    • 2

Select the longest of the forget-me-nots' stems in the late spring or early summer. These will grow up the trellis.

    • 3

Secure the young shoots of the forget-me-nots to the trellis. Tie twine loosely around the stems to hold them in place.

    • 4

Allow the forget-me-nots to grow throughout the season. Tie more stems to the trellis as they grow to ensure the plant grows up the trellis, and not out.
