How to Rapidly Dry Wisteria Seed Pods

Wisteria is a rapidly-growing vine that came to the United States from Asia in the mid 19th century. Wisteria is a popular plant in the southern United States, where it often grows untended due to its appreciation of the weather and rich soil in this area. The seed pods of the wisteria are bulky and shaped similarly to the pods of peas, to which the wisteria is related. Wisteria pods will dry quickly for planting if your follow the correct steps.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the mature wisteria seed pods from the vine around late spring. The pods should be brown and feel soft, almost fabric-like. Leave any pods that are green, and allow them to mature.

    • 2

Pull the pods off the vine where the stem joins a thicker branch. Slice through stubborn stems with small gardening clippers. Place the pods into a paper bag.

    • 3

Store the pods in an area that is dry and cool, with good air circulation. Do not cover or otherwise close the bag that the pods are in. Check the pods every few days until they are completely dried and feel brittle to the touch.

Peel the stem down the side of the pod to open it. Pour the seeds from the pod into a plastic storage container, and empty the rest of the pods in the same way. Place the lid on the container, and keep the seeds covered until you are ready to plant.
