How to Control Mondo Grass

Mondo or monkey, grass grows in clumps and spreads easily on its own. Due to the hardiness of the grass, it is usually used as filler in landscaping or to create borders along the edge of yards. However, because mondo grass propagates quickly from year to year, you may notice it taking over certain areas. You must be diligent with your landscape maintenance in order to control the grass.

Instructions

    • 1

Trim mondo grass in late winter by mowing it. Cutting off the tops removes any old leaves that might have been damaged by winter weather; it will grow back fuller than before.

    • 2

Dig up portions of the grass that develop outside of the designated area. Use a spade to dig around the clumps to ensure you get some root with the removed portion.

    • 3

Slice into a clump of grass to divide a clump that has gotten too large. Cut into it with your spade and dig out half of it. You can replant the portion you removed in another location.
