How to Grow Periwinkle in the Shade

Periwinkles are small, evergreen shrubs with dark-green, glossy foliage. The bloom is blue, and the plant is commonly used as a filler in flower gardens or as a ground cover. It grows well in full sun or shade but thrives best in partial shade. Planting this blooming plant in a shady area requires the proper type of soil and plenty of space for the trailing stems. Little maintenance is required after the plant is established, although it can affected by blight, canker, leaf spot and root rot.

Instructions

    • 1

Plant periwinkle in the shade in well-drained soil rich with organic matter. If the soil is not fertile, mix 3 inches of organic matter, such as leaf mold, peat moss or compost, to a depth of 6 inches into the soil.

    • 2

Water the periwinkle enough to saturate the soil. Allow it to dry out between waterings. In shady areas, the moisture does not evaporate as quickly, leading to problems with fungus and diseases.

    • 3

Prune shrubs and trees over the periwinkle plants to thin them out, if possible. This allows more sunlight to filtrate the area. Make the cuts with clean, sharp pruners.

    • 4

Watch for yellow spots or transparent borders around the foliage. This indicates leaf spot. The affected leaves should be removed by hand. Space the plants approximately 12 inches apart to allow room for the trailing stems, ventilation and to prevent leaf spot.

    • 5

Fertilize the periwinkle in the early spring and first week of July with a 5-10-5 or 10-10-10 fertilizer. Follow the product instructions for fertilizer dosage.
