How to Care for Peacock Spikemoss

Peacock spikemoss is an evergreen ground cover plant native to China. It is cold hardy in U.S. Department of Agriculture zones 6 through 10. The stems of the spikemoss are yellow and produce metallic blue-green leaves that resemble peacock feathers. Peacock spikemoss is a rapidly spreading ground cover that thrives in full shade, making it an appropriate foundational plant for shade gardens under large trees. You can also grow the plant in containers.

Instructions

    • 1

Plant the peacock spikemoss in full shade, or hang them in pots or containers in a shady spot. Space them two to three feet apart so they cover the ground without crowding each other out.

    • 2

Water the plant whenever the soil around it becomes dry to a depth of 3 inches. Insert your finger into the soil to test for moisture, and water if it feels dry.

    • 3

Add water to dilute a balanced, all-purpose fertilizer to half strength. Apply the diluted fertilizer to the soil around the plants according to the package directions. Repeat the application once a week during the growing season.

    • 4

Lay down a 2-inch layer of organic mulch around the base of the plant to keep down weeds. You can remove the mulch once the plants are fully grown and shading out the soil.
