How to Care for a Pink Mandevilla

Mandevilla is a flowering vine, and pink is a common flower color among many Mandevilla cultivars, such as "Sunparaprero" and "Alice du Pont.".A pink Mandevilla is an excellent choice for a hanging basket, window box, or trellis. In U.S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zones 8 to 11, Mandevilla can be grown outdoors as a perennial, but in cooler zones, the plant is typically treated like an annual or grown in containers to overwinter indoors. Pink Mandevilla is a low-maintenance plant that requires little special care.

Instructions

    • 1

Grow a pink Mandevilla in full sun for the maximum number of blooms. The soil should have good water drainage, so at planting time, work several inches of organic matter such as compost into the soil to improve drainage. The matter also improves the soil's fertility.

    • 2

Water a pink Mandevilla one or two times a week, especially the first growing season. Irrigate with 1 inch of water to help the plant grow deep roots. In subsequent seasons, the Mandevilla can sustain some drought, but will fare better if watered regularly.

    • 3

Fertilize a pink Mandevilla starting in the spring with a water-soluble fertilizer labeled for flowering plants. Repeat throughout the growing season at a rate recommended on the fertilizer label, often every two weeks, to encourage new growth from which the pink Mandevilla will bloom.

    • 4

Prune a pink Mandevilla in early spring or late winter before it puts out new growth. Prune to shape, to thin crowded areas, and to remove damaged branches. Even if you cut back a pink Mandevilla close to the ground, it will grow again.
