How to Keep a Mandevilla Plant Through the Winter

Mandevilla is a group of around 100 species of tropical vines. The woody plants bloom in summer and fall, producing an abundance of large, fragrant flowers in contrast to scanty leaves. Mandevilla vines grow 10 feet per season, with mature vines reaching 30 feet. The species are hardy to 45 to 50 degrees Fahrenheit. In the United States, you can grow the plants as annuals or as potted perennials that overwinter indoors.

Instructions

    • 1

Take the potted Mandevilla to a sunny window indoors before the temperature drops below 60 F.

    • 2

Cut the vine back to a length that keeps the branches from intruding into your living space. Prune the stems 1/4 inch above a bud at a 45-degree angle.

    • 3

Water the plant once a week until excess water flows out the pot's drainage holes.

    • 4

Move the plant back outdoors after the temperature begins to hold at 60 F or higher in the day without the risk of overnight frost.
