How to Care for Allamanda Cathartica

Allamanda cathartica, also called golden-trumpet, is a perennial vine that is winter hardy only in U.S. Department of Agriculture Zones 9 through 11. It grows quickly and is often treated as an annual in cooler zones. The vine has lush, deep green foliage and grows up to 20 feet long. It produces showy yellow blooms from summer until fall. Allamanda cathartica prefers exposure to full sun and well-drained, moderately fertile soil.

Instructions

    • 1

Loosen the soil at the growing site 8 to 10 inches deep. Incorporate 3 to 4 inches of organic compost if the soil is poor.

    • 2

Dig a hole for planting that is wide enough to hold the root ball without bunching and deep enough to plant the vine at its previous level.

    • 3

Plant the vine and cover the roots thoroughly. Feed with balanced liquid fertilizer, in the amount indicated on the package. Water until the soil feels moderately moist to the bottom of the planting hole.

    • 4

Spread 2 inches of organic mulch over the root zone.

    • 5

Situate a trellis or other structure 3 to 4 inches behind the Allamanda cathartica vine.

    • 6

Water only when the surface of the soil is no longer moist enough to stick to your finger.

    • 7

Attach the vine to the selected climbing structure using plant ties as it grows long enough to reach.

    • 8

Repeat the fertilizer application during late spring or early summer.

    • 9

Trim away dead or damaged growth as needed and prune to keep growth in check.
