How to Remove Trumpet Creeper

The trumpet creeper is a beautiful vine that climbs nearly any structure. It is desirable in some gardens but will quickly take over a tree or structure if allowed to grow ungroomed. The creeper has even been known to choke a tree, killing it. Some may find the low maintenance vine an appealing addition to the garden but others may find them too invasive and want to remove them. This is tricky since the vine clings so tightly and frequently sends out suckers. The roots need to be dug up in order to successfully remove the plant.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut away the bottom vines a few inches from the ground.

    • 2

Pull as much of the vines away from the trellis or wall as possible. As the vine dies the leaves will dry and the rest of the vine will come free. Or, you can take the time to pull each section free.

    • 3

Use a spade to dig up the roots of the trumpet creeper. Be sure not to damage the roots of any neighboring trees. Remove any suckers and the roots.

    • 4

Observe the area occasionally to ensure all the roots and suckers were removed. Any remaining pieces can quickly re-root and become new trumpet creepers.
