How to Prune Back Winter Jasmine

Winter jasmine (Jasminum nudiflorum) is a deciduous viney shrub that grows in U.S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zones 6 to 10. It is a fast grower and blooms yellow flowers in the late winter through early spring. Pruning a winter jasmine is necessary to keep it under control, blooming well, young and pest- and rodent-free. Since winter jasmine blooms on previous growth, prune it yearly in the spring after the vine is finished flowering.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose stems that are misshapen, out-of-control and damaged and prune them back to just above a parent branch or side shoots, using clean, sharp cuts.

    • 2

Thin out crowded stems as well to a parent branch or side shoot.

    • 3

Prune the remaining bush back to a desired height. Make sharp, clean cuts above a side shoot or parent branch. If a winter jasmine is over-grown or pest-infested, cut it back close to the ground, but note that it may not flower for the next year or two.
