How to Water Periwinkle

Two types of periwinkles are common in the home garden: Vinca minor and Vinca major. Both are evergreen ground covers that produce blooms in the spring, summer and fall, depending on the variety. Periwinkles grow best in well-draining soil rich in organic matter, and in soil that is moist. Therefore, maintaining a thriving garden requires some irrigation on your part, especially when rainfall is sparse.

Instructions

    • 1

Pull weeds and add 2 inches of mulch around newly planted periwinkles. Weeds use water that the periwinkles need to become established, and the mulch helps conserve water until the plant spreads and fills in the space.

    • 2

Water periwinkles well the first season, especially the first summer, with about 1 inch of water once or twice a week. This keeps the soil slightly moist.

    • 3

Water established periwinkles about once a week, especially during dry spells, to keep the soil slightly moist. Water them also when the plants begin to wilt or the soil feels dry. However, if the soil feels moist, the wilting is caused by something else, such as rot, over watering or pests.
