How to Plant Blue Sky Vines

Blue sky vines (Thunbergia grandiflora) are fast-growing plants you can use to cover a trellis or other garden feature. The plants have green foliage and rich blue flowers, similar to morning glories, with vines that grow 10 to 20 feet long. The plants are hardy in U.S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zones 8 through 11, and are annual in cooler climates.

Instructions

    • 1

Dig a hole for the root system in a location that has well draining soil. In addition, choose a place that is partially shaded or shaded periodically through the day, and has something close by that the vine can climb. Use a spade to dig the hole.

    • 2

Incorporate several shovelfuls of organic compost into to the hole.

    • 3

Gently pull the vine out of the pot. Dig it out if you need to.

    • 4

Place the vine roots in the hole, and cover them over with soil.

    • 5

Water the surface to dampen the dirt, and cover the base of the vine over with mulch. The mulch traps in the moisture and protects the roots.

    • 6

Lift the end of the vine up and rest it on your trellis or other object that you want the vine to eventually climb.
