When to Plant Scotch Moss

If you are looking for a ground cover moss, you might select Scotch moss. Scotch moss is part of the Sagina subulata species. It is a mat-like moss that reaches about 1 inch tall and grows best when it is exposed to moderate sunlight. Scotch moss loves moist soil, so make sure to water yours regularly -- about once a week but more frequently in areas with lots of sunlight.
  1. Identifying Scotch Moss

    • Scotch moss is a bright green moss that grows in bushy clumps. This makes it a fancy moss good for cottages and whimsical homes. In the spring, the moss bears small white flowers. It sometimes grows in patches as wide as 12 inches.

    Soil Type

    • Scotch moss enjoys clay soil that is moist yet still well-drained. Water it weekly, unless you live in an area that has extreme sunlight, such as Arizona; keep the soil slightly moist at all times. Fertilize your soil at least once in the spring and once in the fall.

    Planting Schedule

    • Begin growing your Scotch moss seeds in the fall in a greenhouse. Once the seeds have sprouted, continue to cultivate them until the following spring. Replant the Scotch moss the following spring in moist, clay soil outdoors.

    Starter Plants

    • If you want to plant your Scotch moss immediately, then purchase starter plants from your local garden center and plant them during the spring.
