Scotch moss is a bright green moss that grows in bushy clumps. This makes it a fancy moss good for cottages and whimsical homes. In the spring, the moss bears small white flowers. It sometimes grows in patches as wide as 12 inches.
Scotch moss enjoys clay soil that is moist yet still well-drained. Water it weekly, unless you live in an area that has extreme sunlight, such as Arizona; keep the soil slightly moist at all times. Fertilize your soil at least once in the spring and once in the fall.
Begin growing your Scotch moss seeds in the fall in a greenhouse. Once the seeds have sprouted, continue to cultivate them until the following spring. Replant the Scotch moss the following spring in moist, clay soil outdoors.
If you want to plant your Scotch moss immediately, then purchase starter plants from your local garden center and plant them during the spring.
