How to Grow Lindera Benzoin

Lindera Benzoin is a shrub native to the United States and sometimes called the "Forsythia of the Wild." It gets this name for its resemblance to the yellow flowering plant forsythia. Another common name is "Spicebush" because it releases a fragrance when bruised. Lindera Benzoin can grow up 12 feet tall, all the while bearing glossy green leaves, pale, buttery yellow flowers and bright, shiny, red berries. The Lindera Benzoin's leaves turn muted yellow in the fall.

Instructions

    • 1

Plant your Lindera Benzoin in USDA Plant Hardiness zones 4 through 9. Select a patch in your yard filled with moist, well-drained soil. This plant enjoys average soil that is not too wet or too dry. It will grow in sandy, clay and loamy soils with a far-ranging pH from acidic to alkaline, making it a versatile shrub.

    • 2

Locate a spot in your yard that has access to daily sunlight. The Lindera Benzoin is tolerant of shade but prefers the sun.

    • 3

Water your Lindera Benzoin once a week if it is an established shrub or tree. A general rule is 1 gallon of water per gallon-size of tree.

    • 4

Fertilize established Lindera Benzoins about three or four times a year with a general all-purpose fertilizer.

    • 5

Prune your Lindera Benzoin after it blooms in spring. Remove old, dead flowers or stalks.
