How to Grow Bush Gold Iceplants

Ice plant, Lampranthus aurantiacus, is a member of the Aizoaceae family. Native to the Cape region in South Africa, this hardy bush ice plant grows well in many areas of North America including U.S. Department of Agriculture hardiness zones 9 and 10. This evergreen plant with succulent foliage produces vivid yellow blossoms in late spring and can grow to more than 12 inches tall. Ice plants are often planted as a ground cover that is drought-tolerant once established.

Instructions

    • 1

Plant ice plants in locations with full to partial sun and well draining soil. If possible, grow these plants in spots with shade in the afternoon.

    • 2

Space the ice plants 1 to 1 1/2 feet apart to allow room for the plants to spread when growing them as a ground cover. Spacing the plants closer will provide a quicker coverage, if this is a priority.

    • 3

Dig holes the same depth as the containers holding the ice plant transplants. Water the plants well after planting to settle them in place.

    • 4

Add a 3-inch layer of mulch around the bush ice plants to stop weeds from growing until the plants spread throughout the area.

    • 5

Supply 1 inch of water weekly throughout the growing season for the first year any time rainfall is less. This is important to make certain the plant's root system becomes established.

    • 6

Water ice plants only during extended dry periods, once they are established.
