How to Fertilize a Vine

From clematis to honeysuckle, vines provide privacy and add color to barren surfaces such as chain-link fences, brick siding and trellises. Although vines tolerate most soil conditions, applying fertilizer on an annual basis will coax the plants to stand up under stress. Fertilize in the early spring or autumn, as summer applications could cause dieback. Prune the tips occasionally during the growing season to encourage foliage on sparse areas at the base of the vine.

Instructions

    • 1

Rake away any mulch around the base of the vine in all directions, uncovering a total area of approximately 10 feet by 10 feet.

    • 2

Sprinkle 4 cups of fertilizer evenly on the bare soil with a 5-10-10 or 5-10-5 formulation, covering the entire area. Stay 12 inches away from the base of the plant to avoid burning the stem.

    • 3

Mix the fertilizer into the topsoil, working the granules down to a depth of 1 inch. Put the mulch back in place.

    • 4

Water the fertilized area if precipitation won't fall in the next 24 hours. Soak the mulch and soil with 1 inch of water.
