How to Propagate Lysimachia Congestiflora

Lysimachia congestiflora is commonly called Creeping Jenny for its spreading habit, or Golden Globe for the abundance of small, yellow cup-shaped flowers that bloom from spring until fall. It grows well in wet, boggy sites around ponds and along stream banks, and in partially shady sites under trees and shrubs, where it makes a good ground cover or edging. The plants spread by means of runners. Propagate by division in spring.

Instructions

    • 1

Prepare the site for your divisions by removing weeds and loosening the soil with a shovel. L. congestiflora grows best in an organically rich soil, so work in a little compost or other organic material, if necessary.

    • 2

Dig up the parent plant with a shovel. Loosen the soil around the edges of the plant, and then slide the shovel under the plant and pry upward.

    • 3

Separate the plant by pulling it apart, making sure that each new clump has plenty of top growth and roots. You can separate it into two or three large clumps or several small ones. Large clumps are easier to establish, and they put on new growth more quickly.

    • 4

Dig a hole in the new location and set a clump in the hole. Make sure the soil line of the clump is even with the surrounding soil. Plant the divisions 12 inches apart.

    • 5

Water slowly and deeply to saturate the soil. Stop watering when the water begins to run off.

    • 6

Water as necessary to keep the soil moist until the plants begin to show new growth.
