A Fungus is Killing My Creeping Jenny

Creeping Jenny is a spreading ground cover plant. It has small, round leaves and tiny yellow flowers that bloom during the summer months. An invasive plant, Creeping Jenny sometimes spreads outside its planting zone. It is not particularly susceptible to pests or disease, but it occasionally may fall victim to fungal infections such as powdery mildew.
  1. Diagnosis

    • The first step in curing a plant infection is to diagnose the problem. Because Creeping Jenny isn't vulnerable to most plant diseases, there are very few things it could be. This will help narrow the problem rather quickly. The first thing to consider is whether the problem could be something simple such as issues with moisture levels. If a plant does not receive enough water, or if it is sitting in extremely damp soil, it could be damaged. Once those issues have been eliminated, it's time to consider others. In Creeping Jenny, the most likely culprit of diseased leaves is a fungal infection. The most common fungal infection is powdery mildew. Look for yellow or dead leaves and a white powder. If white powder is evident on leaves, it most likely is powdery mildew. If not, it could be another fungal infection.

    Effects

    • Fungal infections typically cause the foliage of a plant to wilt and shrivel. Leaves often will change to yellow, brown or black. They may develop spots. If the infection advances, leaves may begin to fall off the plant. Additionally, fruiting varieties may have damage to their produce. Most fungal infections will not kill plants, but occasionally the damage is fatal.

    Control

    • Commercial fungicides may protect healthy foliage from becoming infected, but they won't always save parts of the plant that are already involved. The best treatment for fungal infections in Creeping Jenny is to remove infected plants from the garden. Pull the plants up by the roots and move them far away from their current location. Ideally, destroy the infected plants by burning them to kill the fungus and prevent it from spreading.

    Prevention

    • Creeping Jenny's proximity to the damp earth can make it susceptible to fungal infections, because fungi love moisture. The best way to prevent fungus in this plant is to trim it regularly to improve air circulation. The soil should drain well. Plant Creeping Jenny in full sun for best results.
