How to Grow Wisteria on a Cable

Wisteria is a vining plant that can reach up to 20 feet in length. It produces cascading pink or purple blooms. The vine is woody, heavy, and invasive. It will pull down commercial trellising, and can pull up roof eaves or shingles if left unchecked. Growing wisteria on a cable will provide appropriate support when you attach the cable to an L-bracket. The bracket allows the plant to grow without attaching itself to the home.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Attach 6- or 8-inch L-brackets to the center of the supporting wall in a vertical line, spacing them 12 inches apart. Stop when you are 3 feet below the roof, so the wisteria won't grow into the shingles or eaves. Use an electric drill and masonry screws.

    • 2

Screw L-brackets to the supporting wall in horizontal lines, spaced 2 feet apart, starting 2 feet from the ground.

    • 3

Cut a length of cable that is as long as your vertical row of L-brackets, plus 12 inches. Slip a loop and eye sleeve over the bottom end of the cable, then slip the end of the cable through the top of the hole in the bottom L-bracket.

    • 4

Loop 6 inches of the cable back on itself and thread it back through the loop and eye sleeve. Crimp the sleeve with crimping pliers. Pull the rest of the cable up through the holes in the rest of the vertical L-brackets. When you reach the last bracket, slip another loop and eye sleeve over the end, thread the cable through the bracket, then fold it back into the sleeve and crimp it closed.

    • 5

Repeat the process of cutting cable for each horizontal row of brackets. Put a loop and eye sleeve on the end of each one, crimp it closed, then thread the cables through the holes on the horizontal row of brackets. Crimp a sleeve on the other end of the cable. You will then have a trellis of brackets and cable.

    • 6

Secure the main stem of the wisteria to the vertical cable with twist ties. Pinch off any side shoots that grow until the wisteria is tall enough to reach the first row of horizontal cable.

    • 7

Select two strong side shoots to grow in either direction along the first row of horizontal cable. Secure the shoots to the cable with twist ties. Continue training the wisteria up the main vertical cable, and selecting two side shoots for the horizontal cables.
