How to Care for Trumpet Creepers

The trumpet creeper (Campsis radicans) practically cares for itself. It is so easy to care for, in fact, woody plant expert and horticulturist Michael Dirr says that if you have problems, you should "give up gardening." Native to the United States, trumpet creeper vines grow from 20 to 30 feet in length, quickly. They bear yellow, red or orange flowers from middle to late summer, depending upon region, within zones 4a through 10b on the U.S. Department of Agriculture Plant Hardiness Zone map.

Instructions

    • 1

Grow the trumpet creeper in full sun for best flowering.

    • 2

Provide a sturdy support system, as the trumpet creeper is a heavy vine.

    • 3

Water the trumpet creeper only during periods of drought. Soak the soil to a 10-in. depth at the base of the vine and allow it to completely dry before watering again.

    • 4

Prune the trumpet creeper in summer after it finishes flowering. Feel free to prune it heavily, cutting it all the way back to control its size.
