How to Grow Sweet Peas and Morning Glories

Ipomea cv. Morning Glory is a simple to grow vine, and it comes in an array of vibrant colors and strong fragrance, depending on the variety. Lathyrus odoratus cv. Instructions

  1. Sweet Pea

    • 1

Prepare your soil. Dig at least one foot into the ground, and amend it with manure. Water thoroughly. Choose a place near a plant like squash or beans for partial shade.

    • 2

Soak your sweet pea seeds overnight before planting. Sew them about two inches deep in the ground next to a trellis, arbor or stakes.

    • 3

Water your sweet pea seedlings every several days, keeping the soil moist but not wet. Pinch the tips when the peas grow four or five inches tall for a stronger plant and more stems.

    Morning glory

    • 4

Prepare your soil similarly to the soil for your sweet peas. Choose a spot in full sun.

    • 5

Soak the morning glory seed overnight, as with the sweet peas. Nicking the hard seed coat also helps the seed absorb water.

    • 6

Sow seeds, and cover them with 1/4 inch of soil, spreading them six inches apart. Water thoroughly. Water every few days, never letting the soil dry out completely.

    • 7

Apply a well-balanced fertilizer monthly, and apply a layer of mulch to retain moisture and prevent weeds.
