How to Care for Liriope Grass

Liriope grass, also known as lilyturf, is an evergreen ground cover that multiplies rapidly. While liriope looks similar to grass, it is in fact a member of the lily family. From July to August, liriope is in bloom, sporting multiple flower spikes in lavender, purple or white. Flowers are followed by black berrylike fruits. Liriope is a sturdy landscape plant, tolerating dry and hot conditions or even deep shade. It is easy to care for and propagates rapidly.

Instructions

    • 1

Prepare a bed for new liriope plantings using a rototiller. Force weeds to germinate by applying a complete fertilizer to the prepared bed and watering well for up to two weeks. Spray the newly emergent weeds with a systemic herbicide. Wait seven to 10 days for the seedlings to die. Work in compost and another dose of complete fertilizer to a depth of about 6 inches. Water again to germinate any remaining seeds and destroy them.

Plant containerized transplants in the prepared bed at an interval of about 12 inches for spreading types or six inches for clumping varieties. Ensure the roots and rhizomes are covered completely with soil, but leave the crown at or above the soil line. Press firmly on the soil around each plant to ensure good coverage.

Water soil so that it is moist, but not soggy -- liriope will not tolerate wet feet. Fertilize lightly from February to September each week with a slow-release fertilizer. Top dress with 1/2 inch of compost each year to encourage the rhizomes to spread.
