How to Repot a Star Jasmine

True jasmines are members of the Jasminum genus of plants, while star jasmine belongs to the Trachelospermum genus of plants. Although star jasmines are not true jasmine plants, they produce similar blossoms with an equally fragrant scent. Properly transplanting a potted jasmine to a new container provides the adequate space necessary for the optimal growth and health of these ornamental vines.

Instructions

    • 1

Select a pot with a width that is about one-third to one-half larger than the current pot. Choose a pot that has several drainage holes on the bottom for proper moisture control.

    • 2

Place a 1-inch thick layer of washed pea gravel in the bottom of the pot. Add enough potting soil to allow the surface of the star jasmine’s rootball to remain slightly below the rim of the pot. Gently tamp the layer of soil with your fingertips to form a flat surface.

    • 3

Remove the root ball from the existing pot by gently easing the sides of the soil away from the pot edges with your fingertips. Tip the pot on its side to facilitate careful removal of the root ball. Avoid pulling the plant out of the pot by the fragile vines and stems.

    • 4

Make three or four cuts with a sharp knife across any roots that curl around the outside of the root ball and that tie the roots into a tight clump. Gently free the root ball by spreading out the bound roots. Place the loosened root ball on top of the layer of soil in the new container.

    • 5

Combine equal amounts of well-drained potting soil with leaf mold or peat moss. Insert the planting medium around the edges of the root ball, bringing it level with the surface of the root ball. Press out any air pockets and add additional soil to ensure a level surface inside the pot.

    • 6

Prune off any dead vines or vines that broke during the transplantation process. Set the transplanted star jasmine in an area with filtered light, preferably in outdoor locations during the summer. Keep your star jasmine in a location that experiences daytime temperatures between 68 and 72 degrees Fahrenheit and nighttime temperatures between 50 and 55 degrees Fahrenheit.

    • 7

Water your transplanted star jasmine until a few drops of fluid appear around the drainage holes. Keep the soil slightly moist by watering deeply whenever the surface soil shows signs of dryness.
