Pull any weeds in the soil at the base of the fence. Cover the planting site with a 4-inch layer of well-rotted manure and turn it into the soil to a depth of 10 inches. Remove any stones you find.
Remove any canes holding the ivy upright in its nursery container. Dig a hole at the base of the fence that is large enough to accommodate the root ball of the plant.
Remove the ivy from the nursery container. Loosen the soil around the roots with your hand and lower the plant into the hole you made. Firm the soil around the base of the plant so it is at the same depth it was in the container.
Lay the shoots out along the base of the fence in opposite directions. Place one wire peg over the shoots every 12 inches, to keep them from blowing off the soil until they root.
Water until the soil settles. The ivy will send lateral shoots up the lattice. You can secure them to the lattice with twist ties.
