How to Grow a Passion Plant From Seed

The Passiflora family is a large genus with hundreds of varieties and hybrids, including the popular passionflower and passion fruit plants. Whether you are sprouting seeds from your passionflower vine or a passion fruit from the grocery store, the process is the same. However, seeds gathered from the yard or from a fruit are likely to be hybrids. While hybrid seeds are not true to the parent plant, the seedlings are usually interesting to grow. The passionflower vines are grown in USDA zones 6 to 10, while the passion fruit (Passiflora edulis) is grown in USDA zones 9B to 11.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the seeds from the fruit. Place in orange juice or vinegar, just barely covering the seeds, and soak for four days. Pour off the juice and wash the seeds gently in fresh water.

    • 2

Plant the seeds in a flat or small peat pots in a sterile seed-sprouting mix. Cover with 1/2 inch of soil and water thoroughly.

    • 3

Place in a warm location in bright, filtered light. If your house is cool, cover a heating pad with plastic to protect it from water. Set it on medium and place the tray with the flats or pots on it. Plug it into a GFCI-protected outlet to protect yourself from electrocution.

Monitor the seeds carefully, misting daily if necessary to keep the soil moist. Fresh seeds should germinate in a week to 10 days. Older seeds may take up to 30 days to sprout.

    • 5

Transition to the permanent location when the seedlings are 8 to 12 inches tall. Place the seedlings outside for an hour the first day, then move them back inside. Increase the time outside by one hour daily until the seedlings are outside all day. Then transplant next to a sturdy trellis.

Water and fertilize regularly with a balanced fertilizer, following the manufacturer's directions. Passiflora are heavy feeders.
