How to Grow Vines in Glass Canisters

The method of growing plants in only water is known as hydroponics. While there are many different types of plants you can grow this way, the sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas) is often the vegetable of choice when it comes to growing vines in glass containers. Not only does the sweet potato produce a gorgeous purple-colored vine with lush green leaves, but also it has an intricate root system creating a nice visual inside the glass canister as the vines grow.

Instructions

    • 1

Select a firm sweet potato that already has eyes on it. The eye is where the bud forms. It is the starting point where the vine grows.

    • 2

Insert one kabob stick into each side of the sweet potato. Press each stick at least 1 inch into the middle section of the sweet potato. This gives the potato support as it sits atop the canister’s rim.

    • 3

Fill the glass canister with water. Place the sweet potato into the water with the narrowest end of the potato facing downward into the water.

    • 4

Set the glass canister in a sunny location. Vines start appearing in just a few days.
