How to Germinate Clematis Radar Love Seeds

Clematis is a flowering vine in the buttercup family. While most clematis bear no resemblance to the buttercup, the Radar Love variety (Clematis tangutica “Radar Love”) shares the same flower color -- a golden yellow. Radar Love vines grow to 8 feet in length and reportedly bloom within four months of germination. After they fade, the seed pods are worthy of inclusion in dried floral arrangements. Plant Radar Love seeds in late winter, early spring, late summer or early fall within zones 3a to 8b on the U.S. Department of Agriculture Plant Hardiness Zone Map.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a germinating container that has holes in the bottom for drainage. Pots, flats, even empty margarine containers through which you've poked holes are suitable.

    • 2

Fill the container with a sterile seed-starting potting mix and moisten it until it's saturated. Set the container aside to drain and wait until the soil is moist but not wet to sow the Radar Love seeds.

    • 3

Place the seeds on top of the mix and cover them with a light sprinkling of sand -- less than 1/8 an inch is ideal. Spray the sand covering lightly with water from a spray bottle and keep it moist while the Radar Love seeds germinate.

    • 4

Place the container on a heat mat at a temperature of 70 F in an area with lots of indirect sunlight. Radar Love seeds germinate within 30 days.

    • 5

Transplant the seedlings into small individual pots, filled with regular potting soil, when they have three sets of leaves. Grow them indoors until the weather warms to at least 70 F.
