How to Help a Star Jasmine Vine Grow Better

Star jasmine is native to China, Korea and Japan and isn't really a member of the jasmine family, but rather hails from the Apocynaceae or dogbane family. Its name is derived from the small star-shaped white or yellow flowers that have the intoxicating fragrance of jasmine. A hardy evergreen vine in USDA zones 8 to 10, star jasmine is a slow-growing (10 to 12 inches annually), easy-care plant. Not fussy about soil type, the vine can become sparse-looking and difficult to establish over time.

Instructions

    • 1

Grow your star jasmine where it will receive strong, indirect light. Star jasmine tolerates direct sunlight, but does not thrive in direct sun with hot temperatures.

    • 2

Water star jasmine on a regular basis for best growth and appearance. During the first year after planting, keep the soil moist to allow the plant to establish a deep, extensive root system. Once established, star jasmine can tolerate brief periods of drought, but it does better growing in well-draining, moist soil.

    • 3

Prune the star jasmine after vine has flowered to increase fuller, bushier growth and encourage more flower bud development for next year. Pruning also will improve the shape and help train the vine to grow where you want..

    • 4

Pinch off new growth to encourage the vine and fill in the interior. Deadhead flowers to extend the bloom time.
