Care for Queen's Wreath Vine

Queen's wreath vine (Antigonon leptopus), sometimes called coral vine, is a fast-growing perennial with a twining growth habit. It reaches lengths of up to 40 feet and produces white, red or pink blooms during summer and early fall. It rapidly climbs almost anything in its path and is a good choice for covering unattractive spots in the landscape. The queen's wreath vine grows well in full or partial sun and most well-drained soils, though fertile conditions produce the most rapid growth. It is hardy throughout U.S. Department of Agriculture Zones 8 to 11.

Instructions

    • 1

Make a planting hole just deep enough to set the queen's wreath vine at its previous level. Remove one-half of the soil taken from the hole and replace it with organic compost.

    • 2

Place the vine into the hole at the depth it grew when purchased and cover its roots. Water until the soil feels evenly moist.

    • 3

Position a trellis or other climbing structure 3 to 4 inches behind the vine right after planting. Train the queen's wreath vine to climb as it grows by carefully draping its tendrils over the structure when they become long enough to reach.

    • 4

Spread a 3-inch layer of mulch under the vine.

    • 5

Water every week, unless soaking rainfall has occurred. Increase the amount of water provided during the hottest days of summer.

    • 6

Feed with general purpose fertilizer, in the amount indicated on package directions, before new growth emerges in spring.

    • 7

Prune off winter-damaged portions of the vine during early spring.
