How to Hang Vines on a Porch

A porch is a wonderful place to pass the time on a cool summer night. If you live in a busy area, though, it can also feel awkward to be out in the middle of the neighborhood, talking with your friends. Growing vines that will hang around your porch is an ideal way to create a space that is both private and energy efficient.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose the type of vine you wish to plant near or on your porch. Morning glories, climbing hydrangea and trumpet vines will grow thickly and create a screen, whereas sweet peas, jasmines and clematis will add fragrance and less of a screen effect. You must also decide if you want a perennial or annual vine. Perennials grow much more slowly, but you do not need to replant them each year as you do with annuals.

    • 2

Decide where you want the vines to grow. If you want to create shade on one side, consider installing a trellis alongside the porch. If you are looking for simple decoration up your porch railings or columns, a trellis is not necessary.

    • 3

Install your trellis, if needed, along the side(s) of the porch where you want your vines to grow.

    • 4

Dig holes in front of the trellis, railing or column and plant your chosen vine plants according to the nursery's directions. Amend your soil as needed and water the plants deeply and thoroughly during the first week as they establish themselves.

    • 5

Train the vines to grow up the railing, trellis or column. Most vines will find things to grab onto, but if you want the vine to wrap a certain way, consider tying it in place with twine or a zip tie as it grows.
