How to Cut Back a Mandevilla Vine

Mandevilla vines, hardy to zones 9 and above on the U.S. Department of Agriculture Plant Hardiness Zone Map, provide tropical pink flowers to the summer garden. The twining vine reaches 10 feet in height and is easily controlled to a trellis or other support structure by pruning. One of the best parts of growing mandevilla is that it blooms on new wood so the gardener is assured of flowers even after hard pruning. Cut back the mandevilla vine in late winter or early spring.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut out old wood and broken stems. Cut them back to the main stem.

    • 2

Remove stems that are crowded together to provide more room for flowers. Cut off the smallest and leave the larger, more robust stems.

    • 3

Prune the rest of the mandevilla to keep it to the support structure.

    • 4

Rejuvenate the old mandevilla vine by cutting it back to within 12 inches from the soil. It will produce new growth from the crown and flower the same season.
