Visit a reputable nursery to choose your starter plant or plants. A good time to go is early spring or fall. Select an area in your yard where the jasmine will have plenty of room to grow tall and wide. While good soil will give your plant a healthy start, you don't have to worry too much about the pH, as the plant will do well in almost any soil type. Good drainage is important, however.
Prepare your soil by digging a hole at least twice the diameter and depth of the potted plant you purchase. Turn the soil and loosen it and remove any large rocks, weeds, sod and debris.
Gently remove the plant from its original container and set it into the hole. Backfill the hole with soil and tamp it down so the plant holds firm.
Add a layer of mulch around the base of the plant to a depth of 2 or 3 inches. Water the plant in well.
Observe the plant growing over time, watering periodically and providing support, such as a trellis, fence or wall, for the branches as they develop and climb. Prune dead branches and thin old shoots after the blooming season has completed, or sometime late in autumn.
