How to Germinate Oats

Oats are a healthy food choice that are high in fiber and low in calories. They also contain antioxidants and can potentially lower cholesterol and the risk of cardiovascular disease. You can use oats in a variety of foods and drinks, such as oatmeal, cookies, bread, cereal and beer. If you are interested in growing your own oats, you can successfully germinate healthy plants from seeds.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose the proper area and conditions in which to grow oats. Oats favor soil that is primarily composed of silt or clay-loam. These soils retain water better than sandy soils. You can plant oats in early spring or fall. Select an area that receives full sun.

    • 2

Rid the ground of grass, weeds or other vegetation by raking and hoeing.

    • 3

Dig a hole that is about 1/4 inch deep and sow an oat seed. Continue this for as many seeds as necessary, placing the seeds approximately 1 to 2 inches apart.

    • 4

Water the seeds as needed until they germinate. Ideally the ground should stay moist the entire time you are waiting for the plants to sprout.
